Essential Trail Preparation
Detailed Trail Gear & Apparel Checklist
Trekking the ancient passes of the Kumano Kodo requires balancing lightweight daypack comfort with mountain weather readiness. Because our private support team manages daily door-to-door luggage forwarding to your evening ryokans, you carry only a light 20L daypack on the trail.
1. Footwear & Trail Apparel
- Waterproof Hiking Boots: Sturdy boots with firm ankle support and grippy rubber outsoles (Vibram or equivalent). Ensure boots are well broken-in before your tour.
- The “No Cotton” Rule: Wear synthetic or merino wool base layers. Cotton retains moisture, causes chafing, and leads to rapid body cooling in rain.
- Waterproof Shell Jacket & Pants: Breathable Gore-Tex or equivalent rain protection. Mountain weather changes rapidly.
- Merino Wool Hiking Socks: 2 to 3 pairs of cushion socks to prevent blisters and manage moisture.
2. Daypack & Hardware
- 20L–30L Daypack: Comfortable daypack with hip belt and rain cover. You only carry daily essentials while main luggage is forwarded.
- Telescoping Trekking Poles: Essential for protecting knees on steep cobblestone ascents and mossy, slick stone descents.
- Hydration Capacity: At least 1.5L water capacity via reusable bottles or hydration reservoir.
- Internal Waterproof Dry Bags: Protect passport, electronics, and spare clothing inside ziplock dry bags.
3. Personal Essentials & Cash
- Japanese Yen Cash (JPY): Rural Wakayama is strictly cash-based. Bring cash for trailside drink vending machines, temple stamp books (Nokyo-cho), and shrine offerings.
- Trash Ziplock Bags: 100% Pack-Out rule. There are no trash bins on UNESCO trails; carry ziplock bags to pack out daily waste.
- Trail Snacks & Electrolytes: High-density energy bars, nuts, and electrolyte powder to replenish during long mountain legs.
- Personal First Aid & Blister Kit: Compeed blister pads, ibuprofen, sunblock, lip balm, and personal prescription medication.
4. Luggage Forwarding Standard
- Daily Baggage Transport Included: You do NOT hike with heavy luggage. Your main bags are forwarded daily door-to-door to your next ryokan or monastery.
- Luggage Limit: 1 standard piece of main luggage (max 20kg) per guest for seamless vehicle transfers.
- Ryokan Clothing: Traditional lodgings provide yukata robes and towels for evening soaking, so pack light casual evening clothing.
